I'm sorry you're sick : ( Hope you feel better soon.
and on Holmes -- it hurts my brain. I don't understand where the market is for it. I mean, is the overlap of people who are 1) familiar enough with Sherelock holmes to really get a spoof (of movie length, you know, beyond "the game is afoot!") and 2) enjoy both Will Ferrel and Cohen, really that big? But then, people seem willing to watch anything with will ferrel, and I'll watch anything about holmes (Despite Will Ferrel, which is saying A LOT.) so I guess it'll work...
Thanks. I hope I feel better soon, too.
Imo, most of the Holmes spoofs really, really suck. But I think Cohen and Ferrel have a real chemistry and play well off each other. And, knowing those two, even people who don't see Holmes and Watson with slash goggles will see it. ;D

I admit I haven't seen a lot of the existing holmes spoofs. I'll watch anything with holmes, I just haven't ever hunted down a lot of the stuff. But Jeremy Brett playing holmes (not a spoof I know) -- he is an obsession of mine.
Oh, I definitely agree that they'll make the slashiness visible to all. I'd be surprised if there weren't numerous jokes from Cohen on it. : ) Though I can't speak of their chemistry together, I've never seen them in the same movie. I've only seen Cohen in Borat, which I loved, and I tend to avoid Ferrel like the plague (although not as much as I avoid Vince Vaughn, sorry, rambling).

forgot to sign in. Blast.
I love Sherlock Holmes and will watch just about anything. In fact, the first Broadway play I ever saw was a performance of Sign of the Four. It was brilliant. It won a Tony for special effects but still closed due to low attendance, IIRC. I never thought anyone could replace Basil Rathbone as Holmes for me, but then I saw Jeremy Brett in the role and I was a convert. I bought all the DVD's for Christmas one year. My favorite non-Brett movie was The Private Life (or possibly Lives) of Sherlock Holmes. It was a very interesting movie. I also liked the Seven Percent Solution. And I have a whole bookshelf of Holmes stories not written by Doyle. He was quite an obsession of mine several years back.
The spoofs I've seen are really pretty bad, so I was disappointed that this new movie was going to be another one. But I think it has potential with Cohen and Ferrel in the roles.
Heh. Talk about rambling...;D

I'll have to take a look at the private life of sherlock holmes. Did you ever see a movie about the life of young Holmes? Not the one where it's two kids, I don't think, but supposedly a good one? I was told there was one by a friend, but must have misremembered the name and can't find it.
I admit, I saw Brett first, and I've never been able to make it through a Basil flick, b/c Brett plays him *precisely* as I imagine him. I think he's just glorious. (and every time I watch it, I want Holmes/Watson fic). Do you have any recs for the non-Doyle stories? I always hesitate with that sort of thing, b/c I've been disappointed every time I've tried.
Ironically, the livelongnmerry bid I'm winning at the moment is for a combination story/care package thing -- and if I end up winning, I'm requesting Holmes/Watson. : )
It been ages since I read those stories and I have a dreadful memory for books I've only read once. There were a number of very good ones (and also some truly awful ones) where the author incorporated Jack the Ripper into the story. In one really good one, Holmes actually was the Ripper.
I think the one with the young boys was called Young Sherlock Holmes, but there is another one that I know I've seen but don't own and can't recall the title.
Yeah, once you've seen Brett, Rathbone is too sexy and Bruce too bumbling. I still enjoy the films for the nostalgia, but that's not Holmes and Watson.
Hee! I think I seriously considered bidding on that one, but I let it go. Heh. I think I at least thought about bidding on everything there at least once.
I was excited too. Until I found out it's going to be a Judd Apatow movie. *groan*
And as to livelongnmarry: I got my visa bill today. *nervous laugh* So no, I won't be doing any bidding (though the prospect of getting Lee to write me Snape/Remus/Charlie adultery-dub-con-voyeurism *may* overcome my better judgement *hee*).
*Googles* Hm. I'm not familiar with him. I know I *did* like The 40 Year Old Virgin and HATED Knocked Up.
As for overcoming your better judgment, well, I can't remember the exact line and it would take me too long to find, but one of the things that had a real impact on my life was a line from Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. But basically someone was making fun of one of the characters for wasting his entire paycheck on drinks and cigars at a whorehouse and the character basically responded that in his life he had hundreds of paychecks and he couldn't remember a single thing he did with them, but that one time at the whorehouse, he could remember. I don't apply this philosophy to everything I want, but now and again I'll treat myself to something truly extraordinary.
Well, I've been treating myself a lot lately. Says the woman who twenty minutes ago dropped $110 on a Stratford ticket. Seeing Martha Henry in The Trojan Women beats fanfic - any fanfic - hands down, no contest.
Well, I've been treating myself a lot lately.
I've been told moderation is the key. Meh. ;D
So I've heard. Never been my philosophy. ;-)
Oh, ewww ... O.o. My stomach, it lurches.
I might take a look and bid on something if it wasn't on LJ. Is there one on another journal service, or some other place?
Heh. I know. But if there has to be another spoof at least this one has a comedy team that has some chemistry together. They might just pull it off. Or it will be a colossal bomb. ;D
No, I'm afraid it's only on LJ. Frankly, I doubt IJ's servers could handle the traffic. On the opening day of bidding LJ temporarily went down for emergency maintenance. No idea if the two are related but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was.
I certainly won't encourage you to do something you'd prefer not to do, but, honestly, the auction is a fund raiser to support marriage equality. I hate to see you not visit just because it's being held on LJ which has nothing at all to do with the charity. Though visiting will give LJ hits making it appear more popular to potential advertisers if that is your concern.
Hey, this works, too. ;D
I just love all the craziness of an auction environment. I can't wait for the last hour. I hope LJ's servers are robust.
If you friend my journal there is a way to help donate. I'm running a friends only ficlet sale - 500 words for ten bucks. If you decide to, I'll have to friend you back and then just hit the 'live long and marry' tag.
Oh, I must have missed this. What a wonderful idea! I was trying to think of something similar I could offer that people would want, but couldn't come up with anything. I know my art looks like it's drawn fast, but it really isn't. And for every piece I post, I throw out 100 others. So that wasn't an option for me. But I love what you're doing here. I still wish I could think of something.
I've got a post over on LJ. But watching those bids come in yesterday, I knew that there had to be folks like me that just couldn't kick that much money around. Ten sounded reasonable. ;)
I can imagine the art taking time. My daughter draws and paints and it is amazing to see just how she invests in each piece. If an idea strikes me, I'll come back and let you know.
Please do. Yeah, the bids are a mixed blessing. On one hand high bids means more money for charity, but it also means that a lot of people are going to be left out of the winning. I considered a $1 donation raffle for my art and a ginormous box of HP goodies, but even then only one person would win and I want something for everyone to win. I'd like to think that the fics I win in the auction represent a win for everyone who reads Snarry, but I know not everyone shares my kinks. *sigh*
Anyway, sorry for rambling. But I love your idea and I'm glad you've found a way to include everyone.
Oh, but honey, I definitely share your kinks. I think I about wet my pants when I saw that meeting of the minds you and swtalmnd came to. *g* And you weren't rambling. I think we all just want to raise as much as we possibly can. That's a good thing!
Hee! I probably drove her so crazy with my wibbling that she offered a bin price to finish the fic just to shut me up. *g*
Thanks! But, as above, I just decided to send a donation to the charity of my choice anyway [g]. I'm so lazy!
*taking a big step back from you* =:o
And that's not because you're sick. I'm sick too. Here's hoping we'll both feel better soon!
Hee! Yeah, I know. I was disappointed to see the movie was a spoof since, in my experience anyway, those tend to suck. But if it has to be a spoof at least this one has a comedy team that has some chemistry together. I loved Cohen in Sweeney Tood and Taledega Nights (with Ferrel). As Borat, not so much. But I do think he's a very talented and versatile actor. And although I do not want to like Will Ferrel, I generally always like his movies (except Elf).
*sends well wishes and a germ-free virtual hug*
I didn't mind Cohen in Sweeny Todd, but then again he did have his throat slit. Ok who didn't in that movie, but still there are some things you have to embrace. Gene Hackman in drag in Birdcage, and Cohen getting his thoat slashed in Sweeny are two of those for me.
I got my necklace up earlier today. All that headache over photobucket and I ended up not needing it. *headdesk*
Hope you feel better soon! Summer colds are nasty!
Hugs, Aery
Oh, I didn't realize you were having trouble. I'm glad it's sorted. I can't believe offers are still pouring in though bidding seems to have, predictably, slowed. I just hope the servers are up to handing that final hour. It's going to be a madhouse.
I think Cohen is a very versatile and talented actor. I'm not so keen on him as Borat, but I loved him in Sweeney Todd and Taledega Nights with Will Ferrel. The two really have good on-screen chemistry and I have high hopes for this movie.
Link: OMG YAY!
I'm really loving fandom right now, too. (Especially the person who bid way too much for my art, omg wow.) I don't think I've ever been so proud of fandom. :D
Hee! I think that makes three of us who are excited. ;D
And it isn't possible to bid too much on your (or anyone's) art in a charity auction. It's all going to a good cause and the person gets great art in the bargain. Talk about a win-win scenario. Congrats on your bid, hon! |
