Considering how many things can potentially throw people out of fics it's a real testament to the high quality of writing available that there are so many fans still reading.

I know! I've read some absolutely amazing stories that involved no "emerald orbs," long explanations of what every minor character has been doing for the last twenty years, and no Snape looking beautiful while he presents Lupin or Harry or whoever with flowers. There is some magnificent stuff amongst the dreck in our corner of the fan fiction universe.
