Thoughts on Canon Compliance...... [Apr. 30th, 2008|05:00 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I was chatting with someone last night and the discussion turned to canon compliance. I mentioned that I've been surprised lately by my desire for epilogue compliant fics since canon compliance never really used to be an issue for me. And I finally realized that it isn't the canon that's the issue for me, it's Harry's age. At the end of DH Harry is finally close to my own age.

I like Harry, but I was never really able to relate to him so he was never quite as interesting as some of the other characters. It's been ages since course work and tests have been a part of my life. Crushes and dating are a thing of the past. And even when I was a student, I wasn't the kind of student Harry was. Picture the very odd combination of Percy and pre-HBP Tonks and that was me. He's certainly not an uninteresting character, but I just don't have much in common with an orphaned teen-age boy who just happens to be the savior of the wizarding world. But now? Thirty-seven year old Harry is endlessly fascinating to me. He's old enough now to be settled in life or just ripe for a mid-life crisis. But he's still young enough to have almost unlimited options and opportunities. He probably has a much clearer idea of what he wants from life and his place in the world. He's achieved a high measure of success in his job, he's more confident, more mature, and just....more interesting.

Although I find it hard to believe I could ever tire of virgin!Harry, Occlumency lessons and detention, I find I really want to know more about this new grown-up Harry. And the field is wide open. All Jo did was tell us he's married, has kids, and a successful career. We get to fill in all the rest of the details. Is he really a good father? Who are his friends? Is he satisfied with his life? Is being part of the one big happy Weasley family all it's cracked up to be?

I know that I’m more than a year behind and the rest of you have already discovered how to incorporate new canon into your reading, but I’m really starting to find HP interesting again. And I'm really looking forward to the development of new fanon cliches and fanon "facts." And I can't wait to read them all.

That was more than a little weird for me. Harry started out 3 years younger than myself, and the story was set in the past. Then BOOM, the series is over (crappy ending that it was, and yes, I mean the entire book. Noooooo, I'm still not a bit bitter, even almost a year later. ^.^) and Harry's still technically 3 years younger than I am, but older too. Talk about weird.

Hee! Well, Harry is always younger than me no matter how you look at it. Though Snape is actually older if you use his actual DOB. He still died far too young. It was such a waste of potential.

See, he's not dead though. Using a norm from most sci-fi/fantasy type movies/books/shows, no body, no funeral = no death. See how nice that works for us? Not to mention him, lol :D

Worst thing that unthinking woman could have even done, I swear! The message his death sent was not a good one. But, I won't get up on that soap box, the mood I'm in I'd never step down, lol.

As for his age, well My parents were both born in 1959, so... :D But, eh, like Snarry, the age diff doesn't bother me so much. :D

*hugs*

*chokes on her tea*

Your *parents* were born in 1959?! Honey, I'm sure I have underwear older than you. ;D

I'm actually starting to come to terms with the possibility that Snape could have survived. I used to just shake my head at the Sirius fans who chanted "no body, no funeral" after book 5. But I'm right there with them now for Snape.

It's funny, I always used to tease my friend cause of how she took Sirius' death. And here i am doing the same thing over Severus. Yup, even in the little things Karma comes back and bites ya in the tender parts. :D
(lol sorry you got two replies for this. Kids are being distractions)

Ah, yes, karma. She is a bitch. ;D But we have actual canonical proof that Sirius is dead. The jury is still out for Severus. *g*

Yeah, that scene of Harry walking to his "Doom" was a lot of proof. We might not have a body for poor Sirius, but we got his spirit, which is just as good as a body.

On a different note, can anyone please explain to me how a Potions Master couldn't survived Nagini's attack, when Arthur did? Just askin.

I'm on my way to bed so I can get up early for a week long trip to Canada or I'd check for sure, but didn't Arthur get bitten in the leg? Or at least somewhere less vulnerable than the neck? A bite so fierce and close to the head would be much more fatal. Snape actually very likely bled out very, very fast. Plus, who knows what modifications Voldemort made to her between OotP and DH. Her bite was likely more venomous. Though I would certainly have thought that if anyone would have been able to survive her bite, it would be Snape.

Have a good trip! I don't remember where Art got bitten, never stopped to think area might make a difference, good thought though.

Thinking about the ages of the characters is always a little weird for me too.

I think of Harry as significantly younger than myself, because of the difference between his age in the books (sans epilogue) and when I was reading them. In that sense I am 11 years older than Harry. But in the sense of his canon birthdate, I am only 2 years older than he is (and my almost-husband is 1 month younger!).

I think of Severus as somewhat older than myself, for the same reason; he's 10 years older at the end of the series than I was when I was reading it, but of course, in 10 years I will catch up, and I'm shortly going to be just one year younger than he is at the start of the series.

It's a weird mental space. I am simultaneously the same age as two characters who themselves are twenty years apart. I almost don't know who to relate to. Except that's a silly question because I always relate to Severus. :P

I adore Snape. It makes me infinitely sad to realize that he died when he was only 38 years old. A life only half lived and all that potential wasted. He's always been fascinating to me. But I'm delighted to learn that Harry is now equally so for me.

I don't know if I can relate to Severus, but I certainly understand him more.

My husband is turning 36 in June and I was thinking about that the other day and I realized Sirius was 34-35 when he died. I know probably not as much up your alley for favorite character but it killed me because I love him. I just stared crying because he was so young and seen through Harry's eyes perhaps he came across as older maybe. Then of course Remus and Snape gone at early ages as well killed me. It fascinated me about canon all over again.

As far as epilogue fics I am totally into them now as well. I always like to how Harry is with his children or how they are. Part of the reason I liked [info]cruise_director's snarry games entry was I love seeing older Harry and what he thinks. I also never tire of ways to break up Harry/Ginny it always makes me happy.

I remember the first time I realized that Snape died when he was only 38 years old. I was heartbroken. A life only half lived and all that potential wasted. As you said, I am less sympathetic to Sirius, Remus, and James, but their stories are no less compelling. They were all just kids, really. They never had the opportunity to enjoy a life that Harry has been able to know.

I was fascinated by [info]cruisedirector's fic. I really wanted that one to go on longer and give us more background information. I'm wildly curious about James and Teddy. And I'd love to know what happens to James after he is released from Azkaban.

I also never tire of ways to break up Harry/Ginny it always makes me happy.

Hee! Me, too. It's all good for me. I'm fine with Ginny bashing and equally okay with the fics where she ends up be an absolutely wonderful person, but just not the one for Harry.

Jo never said Harry was married! The kids address Ginny as mother, but Harry doesn't call her or think of her as "wife."

Well, okay, we all know damn well they're intended to be married. But I do enjoy the tiny loopholes in canon. In my Potterverse, Harry & Ginny's relationship is an on-again, off-again kinda thing, where they spend a lot of time together for the kids (whom they both adore), but both pursue Draco other interests.

I'm more than happy to accept that interpretation. In fact, I think the relationship between Harry and Ginny would be far more interesting if they either had never been married or are now divorced. Though you could reasonably argue that they must have been married at some point because Jo mentions "the five Potters approached the barrier" and the only people around at that point were Harry, Ginny and their three children. It seems unlikely that Ginny would have changed her name to Potter if they were never married. But divorced works great for me. ;D

Does this mean you want something different for your Charity story? *evil grin* *wink*

I like older Harry stories, but I get really tired of "dealing with Ginny". I prefer EWE or AU, because I really think Harry's quite gay, and I prefer to see him like that rather than as a divorcee/bad dad/reformed heterosexual/adulterer/etc.

I have a soft spot for 14/15 year old Harry because that's how old he was when I entered HP fandom, my "golden age" so to speak. So I'm good with chan, too. But older!Harry revitalized my interest in HP across the board and actually made Harry as interesting to me as Snape.

I have a small preference for canon compliant fics because I think working around those little wrenches Jo threw us makes for interesting reading. But it's not essential. I imagine one day fandom will have a short-cut for getting rid of her in a few sentences like they made a short-cut explaining why Snape killed Dumbledore and how Snape managed to survive.

After reading the thread, I have to add this. I think I'm more into AU/AR now than ever before. I'm done with trying to "Guess what's coming up". I have now move onto, "ok let's mold the world into what we want, and fix the frell ups She made". Now don't get me wrong, I love reading the post TDH fics, whether they are EWE or not, the only thing I prefer is an alive Sev. Don't like the portrait Only Snape fics.

I'm actually surprisingly okay with portrait-only Snape. Probably because the fics I've read have been spectacular. And Snape in those fics doesn't behave in as stilted and or odd a manner as some of the other portraits we've seen. And I love the ones where Harry brings portrait Snape back to life. It's nice to see Harry save Severus for a change. ;D

I love it when you get thinky, you know that! I think for me, I'm just glad to go on enjoying Snarry in all its permutations. A really good author can convince me of anything--even that Snape--gulp--actually did die. But as long as he's sharing that afterlife with Harry, I'm happy!

I am just so excited about Snarry these days. It feels so wonderful after all that time of thinking that perhaps my love for it had run its course. And it's so amazing to find myself as interested in Harry as I am Snape. He's such a fascinating character and together they are truly magical in the very best sense of the word. The Games have really given me so much to think about. And poor Al is going to be stuck with me for a six hour ride to Toronto. ;D

See, I've always loved Harry with a deep abiding love that knows no bounds. And of course the best way I know how to express my love is to give him the happy ending, boffing Snape, that I know he deserves!

Have a fabulous time in Toronto! *hugs*

I was more like Luna, myself. With a touch of angry young Severus, and a bit of Neville for luck. Hmm. No wonder most everyone I knew insisted I was weird.

It seemed to me, right after I closed the back cover on DH, that JKR had given everyone in fanfic langniappes, what with all those holes and tantalizing bits and that terribly silly epilogue. She had to know fanficcers would run with it.

Hee! Oh, I don't think that at all! I think she is very concerned that we only view what really happened which is why she continues to give interviews giving us the facts. Actually, it doesn't bother me overly much that she does that because I imagine were I her, I'd do the same thing, really. It's her story and her baby and I think she genuinely puzzled/amused by fan resistance to (her) reality. Or else she's a brilliant con. ;D

I think she's concerned about *some* facts. And that's been the rub all along, when it comes to fan resistance; we're reading character, where she's writing plot.

Epilogue compliant interests me, but it's a little beyond me. Harry was born in '81, iirc. I was born in '82. I don't know what it's like to be 30-something, but the weirdest writing bit for me is Snape. Assuming he lives, as I prefer, if Harry's older than me then Snape's *way* older than me. I can stretch my mind to writing an older character, but I fear I'd fail at writing that-much-older!Snape.

I read a lovely story that I can't recall the title or author of at the moment, but Snape was sixty-something in it. It was hot and excellent, but... I'm 25. That's not just closer to my parents' age than mine, it's closer to my grandparents'. I just don't know how to write that, although I do love reading it. :)

I don't think you're alone here as I've noticed a number of fics where *Harry* ages but even though Snape somehow survives, the method of his survival either cause him to be de-aged or to stop aging. Interesting.

"Pregnancy and Camel-Riding" by klynie1 features an older Snape and older Harry. The sex was surprisingly hot for two old guys. ;D
